About Me and About this Blog

The WWII Memorial in D.C.
If you're reading this then I assume you know me to some extent.  If not then maybe you're some future PCV  (Peace Corps Volunteer) that found my blog and started reading it for information.  Either way I should start off with a little about myself.  I'm from Russellville, AL, and have lived in Alabama my entire life.  I currently reside in Birmingham, AL, as a student at Birmingham-Southern College.

This blog will focus on the next 3 years of my life that deal with the Peace Corps.  I applied in June of 2013 and received a nomination in August (I think) from the regional office in Atlanta.  Nomination is the first major step after applying to the Peace Corps.  At the beginning of 2014 I received a set of followup questions from the office in D.C. looking to place me somewhere.  During the first week of February I received an invite to serve in the Philippines--coastal resource management program.

Being someone who tries to stay up-to-date with what is going on in the world--the first thing that came to mind was Typhoon Haiyan.  For those of you who don't know (or don't want to read the link), Haiyan was the strongest typhoon/hurricane ever recorded.  The current count says that over 6,000 people died, over 28,000 were injured, and over 1,000 are still missing.

Anyway, all of my preliminary paper work is done (or at least everything to this point), and medical clearance hurdles have been jumped.  Staging begins on July 7th in Washington, D.C.  It will last till the 9th when we will leave for the Philippines.  This blog will probably be really slow between now and then, but maybe it will be enjoyable to you at some point.  Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions or blog post topic ideas!

-Joe
